Case studies >> Printing for the Engineering & Construction industries
Working closely with the Domestic Building Services Panel of The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers for about 8 years has built up a strong relationship and the successful production of three industry standard technical manuals.
The first of the manuals, The Domestic Heating Design Guide, was published in November 2000 and underwent 8 reprints until February 2007 when S S Media was approached to design and produce a revised edition.
The Solar Heating Design Guide was produced from Word files supplied to S S Media, converting the document, images, tables and graphs into a 2 colour format suitable for print production.

The Domestic Heating Design Guide proved to be more of a challenge. From archived PDF files, S S Media extracted the content into a native text format which underwent editing by the panel. Additional revised and new diagrams were introduced to the text, converted from CAD PDF's into spot colours and placed within an updated layout.
The new format for The Domestic Heating and Design Guide was published in February 2007, with a reprint in January 2008. So far, it has sold over 20,000 copies.
The Underfloor Heating Design Guide has been produced in runs of 3,000, while The Solar Heating Design Guide was first published in August 2007 with a run length of 2,000. This title is returning to S S Media for reprinting in the very near future.
S S Media continues its close working relationship with IDHEE, looking forward to producing other future titles for them in the future, alongside managing the print requirements for the previously published titles.
Dear Sam,
Now that I am retiring as chairman of the Domestic Building Services Panel of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, I wanted to let you know how much your work on the publication of our technical output has been appreciated. Since the Domestic Heating Design Guide was launched in 2000 it has sold over 20,000 copies and is still in demand. One of its important features has been the very high quality work that has gone into its printing. In addition, as revisions have been made over the years your staff have handled the inflow of new technical information with skill and were of great assistance to those responsible for producing the various editions of the Guide.
Your company was also of great assistance in the publication of our Underfloor Heating, Design and Installation Guide, now coming into its second edition, and our Solar Heating Design and Installation Guide, just published. Getting the right mix of paper, colour, and print quality, together with design, plays an important part in enabling the technical content to be appreciated and understood.
One of the Panel’s requirements has always been that the cost of its publications had to be well within a range that would be acceptable to an intended audience made up largely of those who do not normally purchase technical documents. This has been achieved in every case and the Panel’s guides are sold in large numbers at prices well below that generally expected of high quality technical publications.
Thank you for all you have done. I am sure that Bill Bucknell, my successor, will continue to rely on your expertise.
Yours sincerely,
Colin SutherlandOur experience in the production of technical manuals and specialist books means that we can help similar industries (construction, engineering, plumbing etc) to save money on their annual print spend.
We understand the need for these industries to save money on their publications without compromising the quality of the end-product - and we have already produced over 25,000 books for the Domestic Building Services Panel with an experienced, problem-free book printing service."
